Let's Talk About Coffee and Caffeine

Let’s talk about caffeine!  Before we get started keep in mind that caffeine impacts everyone differently.  If you have certain conditions or worries about caffeine’s impact on your health, a conversation with your doctor may be a great idea.  Also, if you love the flavor of coffee without the caffeine, our Colombia Water-Processed Decaf is a great place to start.

Coffee plants contain caffeine as a natural pesticide to protect themselves from pests that may want to eat the coffee cherries on the coffee tree.  Natural caffeine can also be found in other plants like cocoa, yerba mate, tea, and cola trees.

The most common question we get is how much caffeine is in a cup of coffee and that answer depends on several factors – things like if you’re drinking arabica (higher quality coffee beans) or robusta (lower quality, higher caffeine content) coffee, how darkly (not much of a difference between lighter and darker) the coffee is roasted, and what brewing method you chose to make your coffee.

Generally, an 8-ounce cup of drip coffee contains 85-100 milligrams of caffeine while a 2-ounce double shot of espresso can contain around 125 milligrams of caffeine.  If you’re looking for maximum caffeine content, cold brew concentrate is your best option with some concentrates clocking in at 300 milligrams of caffeine per serving.
